The Chugoku region is located in the western part of Honshu. It is composed of five prefectures, Tottori prefecture, Shimane prefecture, Okayama prefecture, Hiroshima prefecture, and Yamaguchi prefecture, and is roughly divided into the Sanin region on the Sea of Japan side and the Sanyo region on the Seto Inland Sea side across the Chugoku Mountains. The Sanyo region has a Setouchi industrial area, and the chemical industry is well developed.
In Sanin, the catch of seafood such as snow crab is high, mainly in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, and Hiroshima oysters are famous nationwide on the Seto Inland Sea side. The rich marine products of the Chugoku region are very popular as gifts for hometown tax payment.
In agriculture, fruit trees such as peaches and grapes are cultivated mainly in pears in Tottori prefecture and Okayama in Sanyo, and “Muscat of Alexandria” and pione are also well known for grapes. Matsutake mushrooms are produced in large quantities, and rice is also cultivated using rice terraces. There are many traditional crafts, and Hagi ware and Bizen ware are highly evaluated.
It is also attracting attention as a tourist destination because of the Izumo Shrine in Shimane, Itsukushima Shrine, which is a World Heritage Site, and Iwami Ginzan.
